The Recovery Path
Rehab When You Can’t Afford$2,000 a Month
Three steps that cost little or nothing: get Medi-Cal, use it for detox and a rehab stay, then move into a free Christian live-in home to work, eat and rebuild.
Why This Works
Let’s be honest: nobody dreams of going to one of these places. But it isn’t only about staying sober. It’s about getting away from the same people, the same neighborhood and the same routine that got you here. Sometimes the best thing you can do is pack a bag, go somewhere new and give yourself a real fresh start.
And don’t pick a program because it has a nicer bed or a bigger TV than home. That’s not what this is. Think about Rocky. When he lost, he didn’t go train in a fancy gym. He went back to basics, back to nothing, and that’s where he got his edge back.
Steel gets stronger the longer it’s in the fire. Sometimes things have to be hard for a while for you to rebuild, and to appreciate what you had. A simple bunk, a job to do and a fresh start can be the best thing that ever happened to you.
Get Medi-Cal
California's free health coverage for people with low or limited income.
- Medi-Cal pays for detox and live-in rehab treatment.
- Apply online at BenefitsCal. A decision can take up to 45 days, but once approved, coverage goes back to the first day of the month you applied.
- Still in jail? Every county jail in California has to help inmates apply for Medi-Cal before release. Ask about it, or the family can start the application now.
Detox and a Rehab Stay
Medi-Cal covers it. One free call gets you screened and matched to a program.
- There’s no set number of days. The stay is based on what the person needs, usually 30 to 90 days.
- This step handles detox, which matters: most free Christian homes don’t do detox themselves.
- Family members can call for their loved one.
Detox comes first
No Medi-Cal yet? You can still get detox now.
This is the biggest hurdle. Most rehabs and Christian homes won’t take anyone until they’ve detoxed, and most people get out of jail before their Medi-Cal is approved. Here’s how to get around it:
- Call the county line below the day they get out. In Los Angeles County, a county-funded program can’t turn someone away or ask them to pay if they’re eligible for Medi-Cal, even if the application is still being processed, according to LA County Public Health. In other counties, tell them you applied for Medi-Cal and ask for a detox bed now.
- Heavy drinking or pills like Xanax? Withdrawal from alcohol or those pills can be dangerous. Go to a hospital emergency room, not a home detox.
- At the hospital, ask about “Hospital Presumptive Eligibility.” Participating hospitals can approve temporary, no-cost Medi-Cal the same day, for up to about two months, while the regular application goes through, according to the California Department of Health Care Services.
