Penal Code 470 — Forgery

PC 470 Bail Bonds — Forgery

Forgery is a wobbler that covers a wide range of document fraud. Chad Conley posts bail 24/7 across Southern California.

Typical Bail:$20,000 – $50,000

What Is Penal Code 470?

PC 470 covers forgery — signing another person's name, altering a document, or creating a false document with the intent to defraud. This includes forged checks, contracts, deeds, prescriptions, and government documents. It is a wobbler: misdemeanor if the forged instrument is valued under $950 and the defendant has no prior forgery convictions; felony otherwise. Forgery charges are commonly filed alongside identity theft (PC 530.5) and fraud cases.

Elements of the Charge

  • You signed another person's name, altered a document, or created a false document
  • You did so without authorization
  • You intended to defraud another person or entity
  • The document was one that could legally bind another or affect their legal rights

Typical Bail Amounts for PC 470

Charge / ScenarioTypical Bail
Misdemeanor forgery (under $950, first offense)$20,000
Felony forgery (over $950 or prior record)$30,000–$50,000
Multiple forged instruments or organized scheme$50,000+
Combined with PC 530.5 (identity theft)Stacked — varies

Bail is set by county schedule and can be modified at arraignment. The value of the forged instrument and criminal history affect the charge level.

Most of Chad's bonds are written at 6%, 7% or 8%. Smaller bonds, under $20,000, can be up to 10% because of posting fees. On a $30,000 bail, your cost is $3,000. Chad offers payment plans.

What the Family Needs to Know

Forgery cases often involve complex paper trails and contested intent. Getting your loved one out before arraignment gives them time to work with a defense attorney to review the evidence and build a defense before the case moves forward.

Cosigning a PC 470 Bond

Forgery bail is generally moderate. Here's what cosigning means:

What Cosigning Means

  • You guarantee the defendant appears at all court dates
  • If they fail to appear, you are responsible for the full bail amount
  • Collateral may be required on larger bail amounts
  • The premium is non-refundable once the defendant is released

No Judgment

Chad's job is to get your loved one home — not to evaluate the charges.

What Happens at Arraignment

At arraignment, the judge reviews the charges and bail. For PC 470, the defense may argue for misdemeanor treatment or reduced bail. Being out before this hearing gives the defendant and their attorney the best position to negotiate.

After the bond

The bond is just the start. Chad stays with you.

Price matters. But a lot of bail companies are salespeople sitting at a desk. They sell you the bond on the phone that night, and after that you get passed from department to department. With Chad, the same person who writes your bond is the one who picks up when something comes up.

A real example (name changed)

Fred missed his court date, and he still owed a balance. Chad helped him anyway. He stayed up late with him and put together the paperwork to ask the court to reinstate his bond. On the way to court, Fred's car broke down and got towed, with the paperwork inside. So Chad did it all over again, and Fred came by the office to pick up a new set.

You could roll the dice on whoever quotes the cheapest bond on the phone. Or you could have a bondsman who picks up when it really matters.
