Insurance Code 548 — Insurance Fraud

IC 548 Bail Bonds — Insurance Fraud & Vehicle Staging

Insurance fraud is a felony prosecuted by dedicated DA units across Southern California. Chad Conley posts bail 24/7 across all five counties we serve.

Typical Bail:$25,000 – $75,000

What Is Insurance Code 548?

IC 548 makes it a felony to willfully injure, destroy, secrete, abandon, or dispose of property that is insured against loss or damage, with the intent to defraud the insurer. The most common form is vehicle staging — deliberately crashing, abandoning, or 'losing' a vehicle to collect an insurance payout. Southern California has dedicated insurance fraud prosecution units in every county DA's office, and these cases are investigated by the California Department of Insurance. IC 548 is commonly charged alongside PC 487 (grand theft) and PC 182 (conspiracy) when multiple people are involved.

Elements of the Charge

  • You willfully injured, destroyed, secreted, abandoned, or disposed of property
  • The property was insured against loss or damage
  • You acted with the intent to defraud the insurer
  • Conspiracy charges are common when multiple people participate in the scheme

Typical Bail Amounts for IC 548

Charge / ScenarioTypical Bail
Single vehicle staging, first offense$25,000
Multiple vehicles or organized scheme$50,000–$75,000
Combined with PC 182 (conspiracy)Stacked — $75,000+
Organized ring with multiple defendants$100,000+

Bail is set by county schedule and can be modified at arraignment. The number of fraudulent claims and total loss amount significantly affect bail.

Most of Chad's bonds are written at 6%, 7% or 8%. Smaller bonds, under $20,000, can be up to 10% because of posting fees. On a $25,000 bail, your cost is $2,500. Chad offers payment plans.

What the Family Needs to Know

Insurance fraud cases often involve extensive investigation before arrest — meaning the DA's office has already built a significant case file. Getting your loved one out before arraignment gives them time to work with a defense attorney to review the evidence and understand the full scope of the charges before the case moves forward.

Cosigning an IC 548 Bond

Insurance fraud bail is generally moderate. Here's what cosigning means:

What Cosigning Means

  • You guarantee the defendant appears at all court dates
  • If they fail to appear, you are responsible for the full bail amount
  • Collateral may be required on larger bail amounts
  • The premium is non-refundable once the defendant is released

No Judgment

Chad's job is to get your loved one home — not to evaluate the charges.

What Happens at Arraignment

At arraignment, the judge reviews the charges and bail. For IC 548, the defense may argue for reduced bail and explore restitution options. Being out before arraignment gives the defendant and their attorney the best position to negotiate.

After the bond

The bond is just the start. Chad stays with you.

Price matters. But a lot of bail companies are salespeople sitting at a desk. They sell you the bond on the phone that night, and after that you get passed from department to department. With Chad, the same person who writes your bond is the one who picks up when something comes up.

A real example (name changed)

Fred missed his court date, and he still owed a balance. Chad helped him anyway. He stayed up late with him and put together the paperwork to ask the court to reinstate his bond. On the way to court, Fred's car broke down and got towed, with the paperwork inside. So Chad did it all over again, and Fred came by the office to pick up a new set.

You could roll the dice on whoever quotes the cheapest bond on the phone. Or you could have a bondsman who picks up when it really matters.
