Gang Enhancement Bail Bonds

A PC 186.22 gang enhancement is added on top of the underlying charge — and it adds $50,000 or more to the bail amount. If your loved one has been charged with a gang enhancement, Chad Conley can help you navigate the bond process.

What Is PC 186.22 — Gang Enhancement?

PC 186.22 is California's Street Terrorism Enforcement and Prevention (STEP) Act. It adds additional punishment when a crime is committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a criminal street gang. The enhancement is added on top of the underlying charge — so a robbery charge with a gang enhancement means the bail for robbery plus an additional $50,000 or more. Gang enhancements are aggressively prosecuted in Southern California, particularly in San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles counties.

What Does the Bond Cost?

The total bail depends on the underlying charge plus the enhancement. For example, a second-degree robbery ($50,000) with a gang enhancement ($50,000) results in $100,000 total bail — a $10,000 premium. Chad charges 8% for military, first responders, and union members.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a gang enhancement mean my loved one is in a gang?

Not necessarily. Prosecutors can allege a gang enhancement if they believe the crime benefited a gang, even if the defendant is not an active member. The enhancement is often contested at trial.

Can the gang enhancement be dropped?

Yes. Gang enhancements are frequently negotiated in plea deals or dismissed at preliminary hearing if the evidence is weak. Your attorney will address this — Chad's job is to get your loved one out while the case proceeds.

How does the enhancement affect bail?

The enhancement amount is added directly to the base charge bail. If the base charge is $50,000 and the enhancement adds $50,000, total bail is $100,000. A judge can raise or lower the total at arraignment.

After the bond

The bond is just the start. Chad stays with you.

Price matters. But a lot of bail companies are salespeople sitting at a desk. They sell you the bond on the phone that night, and after that you get passed from department to department. With Chad, the same person who writes your bond is the one who picks up when something comes up.

A real example (name changed)

Fred missed his court date, and he still owed a balance. Chad helped him anyway. He stayed up late with him and put together the paperwork to ask the court to reinstate his bond. On the way to court, Fred's car broke down and got towed, with the paperwork inside. So Chad did it all over again, and Fred came by the office to pick up a new set.

You could roll the dice on whoever quotes the cheapest bond on the phone. Or you could have a bondsman who picks up when it really matters.
